What this test measures

Tree pollen is one of the most common causes of seasonal allergic rhinitis. In spring, trees release fine pollen grains that travel through the air and can trigger sneezing, nasal congestion, itchy or watery eyes, and sometimes asthma-like symptoms. Because different trees pollinate at different times, a panel that covers several species gives a more complete picture than a single test.

The test uses a blood sample to measure allergen-specific IgE for twelve tree pollens. Common species in this type of panel include alder, ash, beech, birch, cedar, cottonwood, elm, hickory, maple, oak, sycamore, and willow. The laboratory reports a level and a reactivity class for each pollen, and the pattern of results can help point to the seasons and trees most likely involved.

This panel is often ordered when seasonal symptoms are persistent or when the specific trigger is unclear. Sensitization means the immune system recognizes a pollen, but symptoms depend on exposure and individual sensitivity.
