Chromium Urine Excretion Test in Hawaii

What this test measures

Chromium is a trace element found in small amounts in food and the environment. The body uses it in minute quantities, and it plays a part in normal metabolism. Urine testing can show how much chromium is being excreted, which may reflect recent intake or exposure. It is sometimes used alongside blood testing to give a broader view.

The test uses a urine sample collected at the laboratory or collection site. Some laboratories request a spot sample, while others may ask for a timed collection, so follow the provided instructions. Trace element testing requires careful handling to avoid contamination, and the laboratory uses a method suited to measuring chromium accurately at low levels.

Interpretation depends on timing, hydration, and recent exposure, because urine chromium varies with intake and how recently exposure occurred. Occupational or environmental contact, supplements, and diet are all considered. A healthcare provider evaluates the result with the full clinical picture, and the test is not a diagnosis by itself.
