What this test measures

Bumblebees are social insects that can sting when threatened or disturbed. Most stings cause only local pain, redness, and swelling, but some people develop allergic reactions that affect the whole body. These can include hives, swelling of the face or throat, breathing difficulty, dizziness, or a drop in blood pressure. Such reactions are medical emergencies and require prompt care.

The test measures allergen-specific IgE in serum using a laboratory immunoassay. A single blood sample is collected, and the laboratory reports the level of bumblebee venom-specific IgE along with a reactivity class. Venoms from related insects share some proteins, so clinicians often compare bumblebee results with honeybee and wasp venom tests to understand whether sensitization is specific or broad.

A positive result shows sensitization to bumblebee venom, not a certainty that a future sting will cause a severe reaction. The risk depends on the type and severity of past reactions and other clinical factors. An allergist or other qualified healthcare provider interprets the finding and can discuss whether further evaluation is appropriate. Anyone with a history of a severe sting reaction should have an emergency plan.
