Parrot Droppings Allergy Test in California

What this test measures

Allergen-specific IgE is the antibody type involved in immediate allergic reactions. When the immune system becomes sensitized to proteins in bird droppings, it can produce IgE that recognizes those proteins. The laboratory measures the amount of droppings-specific IgE in the blood, which indicates whether sensitization is present. This result supports a clinical assessment and does not by itself confirm that symptoms are caused by bird exposure.

The test uses a single blood sample, so no skin pricking or direct exposure to the allergen is required. Results are typically reported as a quantitative concentration in kilounits per liter together with a graded antibody class. Some orders also include total serum IgE or related avian allergen extracts, because reactions to bird droppings can overlap with sensitivity to feathers, serum proteins, or other bird-derived material.

Bird keepers, breeders, and people who work around parrots and parakeets may order this test when they notice recurring symptoms around cages or aviaries. It can also add detail when a broader bird or inhalant allergy panel returns a borderline result. A qualified healthcare provider should interpret the finding with the person's exposure history, symptom pattern, and other test results.
