Serum Testosterone Test in Alaska

What this test measures

Testosterone is produced mainly in the testes in men and in the ovaries and adrenal glands in women. Levels follow a daily rhythm and tend to decline gradually with age. Measuring the hormone gives an objective look at a value that can be affected by sleep, stress, illness, and the time of collection, so context matters when the result is reviewed.

The test uses a blood sample, typically drawn in the morning when testosterone is at its highest. Several measurements may be needed because a single result can vary. The laboratory reports the total testosterone level and compares it with a reference range adjusted for age and sex. Additional forms such as free testosterone can be added when a more detailed view is needed.

Clinicians order testosterone testing to investigate symptoms such as low energy, reduced libido, erectile changes, mood shifts, or unexplained weight and muscle changes. It may also be used to follow a known hormone condition or to monitor the effect of treatment. Results are not a diagnosis by themselves and should be discussed with a healthcare provider.
